Looking for info on sport horse gelding with large scar on hind end

I'm looking for any possible info on a sport horse gelding of unknown breeding that was purchased at a horse auction in Oregon, near eugene. This dark bay, 16.2 hh gelding, has a small star, no white anywhere else, and a large scar on his left haunch. He is a fabulous horse approx (5-7 years old) or so the vet says judging by his teeth. I've only owned him a short while, but he was purchased at the auction this past spring (2008) He is in dressage training and is showing great promise. He is just such a nice horse, with no apparent vices, I just wonder why he was at an auction(almost purchased by a meat buyer)

I also wonder where he got the scar.

Any info on this horse would be so appreciated! It's not that it even matters at this point, I'm only curious :)
