The swinging nail - is my mare pregnant?

Has anyone ever heard of the practice of determining whether a mare is pregnant by hanging a nail by a string over her back and watching to see if it starts to swing.

Supposedly the nail swinging back and forth along the spine means the mare will have a colt and side to side means a filly.

Does this work or is it just an old wives tale?
